The United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) was adopted in 2000 to promote cooperation to prevent and combat transnational organized crime more effectively.
UNTOC is supplemented by three Protocols against Trafficking in Persons, Smuggling of Migrants and Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms respectively.

The United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime is the only global legally binding instrument against transnational organized crime with 190 parties.
As the guardian of the implementation of UNTOC, UNODC has a vital role to play in assisting States in translating their commitments into actions.
Through UNTOC and assistance to States parties to implement it, UNODC can help protect countless victims.
UNTOC has set up standards to assist parties in adopting legislation to establish criminal offences. It also establishes frameworks for mutual legal assistance and extradition, and foster law enforcement cooperation.

Giovanni Falcone was an Italian magistrate who dedicated his life to the fight against organized crime.
After his assassination in 1992, the Fondazione Giovanni e Francesca Falcone pursued his legacy and played a key role in paving the ground for the negotiation and adoption of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) in 2000.
